Microsoft Establishes New AI Hub in London

Mustafa Suleyman, former co-founder of Google DeepMind, recently announced the establishment of a new AI hub in London. This decision comes shortly after his appointment as the head of Microsoft’s new AI division.

    Expanding AI Infrastructure in London

In his inaugural blog post as the CEO of Microsoft AI, Suleyman expressed his excitement about the new hub’s potential. He stated that it would focus on advancing state-of-the-art language models and their supporting infrastructure. Additionally, the hub aims to create world-class tooling for foundation models.

    Collaboration with AI Teams

The new hub in London will collaborate closely with AI teams across Microsoft and its partners, including OpenAI. OpenAI, a prominent player in the AI field, also chose London as the location for its first international office last year.

    Leadership and Talent Acquisition

Jordan Hoffman, an experienced AI scientist and engineer, will lead the new office. Hoffman joins Microsoft after working at Inflection, another company co-founded by Suleyman, and DeepMind.

    Investment in AI Talent

Suleyman emphasized the UK’s significant pool of AI talent and expertise. Microsoft AI plans to make a substantial, long-term investment in the region by hiring the best AI scientists and engineers for its new hub.

Microsoft will soon post job openings and actively recruit exceptional individuals in the UK. These individuals will work on some of the most interesting and challenging AI questions of our time.

This move will further enhance London’s reputation as one of the world’s leading centers for AI development and research. Suleyman’s decision to establish the hub in London underscores the city’s growing prominence in the AI industry.

    Suleyman’s Background

Suleyman co-founded DeepMind in 2010 alongside Demis Hassabis, its current CEO, and machine learning researcher Shane Legg. Google acquired DeepMind in 2014, and it now operates as a subsidiary of the tech giant. Suleyman left Google in 2022 and co-founded Inflection two months later. He joined Microsoft in March earlier this year, marking a new chapter in his career.

Microsoft’s new AI hub in London signifies the company’s commitment to driving innovation and advancing AI technologies. With a focus on collaboration and talent acquisition, Microsoft aims to establish London as a hub for cutting-edge AI research and development.
