Facebook has filed a lawsuit in Portugal against two developers based there who are said to have stolen user information from Facebook pages. This violates Portuguese protection and Facebook’s usage guidelines.
In Portugal, Facebook has filed a lawsuit against two developers who allegedly stole user information. The developers are said to have used specially browser extensions from the company Oink and Stuff. Without the consent of the user, information such as name or relationship should have been tapped. Overall, Facebook identified four browser extensions that were used and how spyware should work.
Facebook has identified a few browser extensions that are said to contain such malware. These browser extensions are available for Firefox for example. At least some of them can still be downloaded. When a user visits Facebook with one of these browser extensions, their information is tapped. However, Facebook does not rule out that the extensions do the same when visiting other pages. Facebook’s security network has not been compromised. Only the user data could be misused.
Facebook initially kept the incident confidential and launched an investigation. At that time, the allegation also related to a comparable audience. At the time, Mobiburn denied collecting, selling or sharing information. It was pointed out that a possible data leak was not intended. As part of the investigation, Facebook asked companies to take part in a security check. The company wanted to clarify whether the actually collected user information was illegal and to ensure that Facebook information that was stored may be deleted.
Not The First Lawsuit For Cyber Theft
Facebook is now asking the Portuguese judiciary to rule that the accused developers must stop distributing these browser extensions and delete all tapped Facebook information. Facebook filed several lawsuits on a similar matter last year. Software companies for example, have to answer to the court because it is said to have tapped user information.
